Learning objectives

· To provide an overview of the role of spirituality in recovery for consumer/clients, including special populations (e.g., race/ethnicity, sexual identity, age, SES)

· To explore the myths surrounding the separation of church
and state

· To provide a rationale for the inclusion of spirituality in the delivery of mental health services and addressing trauma

· To provide strategies for engaging the faith community in the delivery of mental health services

· To help the faith community to understand their role in the delivery of mental health services  to consumers and
family members

· To provide support for faith communities in collaborating with mental health providers to meet the mental health needs of consumers and family members.

· To provide the framework for the development of practical applications for conducting spirituality assessments, and the inclusion of spirituality in treatment planning and practice.

Biographical Sketch of Dr. Gloria Morrow

 

Dr. Gloria Morrow is one of the nation's leading clinical psychologists, who devoted her early career to teaching students in undergraduate and graduate psychology programs. As an academician, clinician and author, her teaching, counseling and books have helped thousands of people find true inner healing.  As an academician and researcher, Dr. Gloria has presented the results of her research at professional conferences all over the world, including the University of Cape Town, in Cape Town, South Africa.

 

Dr. Gloria has been featured in a host of newspapers and magazines, such as the Inland Valley News, “Psychology Today,” “Jet,” “Heart and Soul,” “Essence,” “Woman’s Day,” and “Black Enterprise.”   She has also has been interviewed on a variety of radio talk shows, and has appeared as a frequent guest on CNN.  She has authored several books, and has also written scholarly articles and chapters in books in her field.

 

Dr. Gloria shares her expertise on many topics, including depression, anxiety, marriage and relationship issues, and a variety of issues relative to people of color from all ethnic backgrounds.  She has become well known throughout the faith community because of her willingness to address the issue of mental illness in the church and the role of pastors and church leaders in granting permission for parishioners to seek mental health services outside the church when appropriate. 

 

Dr. Gloria is a Master Trainer for the CBMCS (California Brief Multicultural Competency Scale) Training Program, and she helped to develop the training curriculum.  In addition, she has facilitated several workshops and seminars focusing on cultural competency issues.  Her work surrounding  the role of Spirituality in recovery has gained notoriety with the development of a one-day seminar and  participation with the Spirituality Initiative in California in the writing of a Spirituality Toolkit.
